Gaucho, City Centre
First Impressions:
Stepping into Gaucho Glasgow, the stylish interior, dim lighting, and rich tones set the scene for a romantic Valentine’s or classy Galentine’s night. I’ve eaten here with both my boyfriend and friends, and it never disappoints. This time, it was date night, and once again, Gaucho’s elegant ambiance and top-tier service made it a firm favourite.
What to order:
We started
with the chicken and chorizo empanadas, along with a selection of bread—grilled rosemary focaccia, pan de bono, chimichurri, and salted butter. For the main, we shared the Chateaubriand, cooked rare (a clear favourite of mine), which comes with two sides and two sauces. We went for chimichurri and peppercorn sauce, alongside Latin mac and cheese, hand-cut chips, and chargrilled baby gem. To drink, I stuck with a Sauvignon Blanc, while my boyfriend took a recommendation from our extremely friendly waitress Olivia, who suggested a craft beer to pair with his meal.
Price rating:
Gaucho Glasgow is definitely on the expensive side, but ideal for a special occasion. Our meal, including starters, a shared Chateaubriand, sides, sauces, and drinks, came to £134 for two. While not an everyday spot, the quality steak, stylish setting, and great service make it worth the splurge for a special night out.
Finsbay Flatiron, West End
First impressions:
Tucked away in Woodlands in the west end of Glasgow, Finsbay Flatiron serves up great steak at a refreshingly affordable price. With low lighting and a laid-back, cosy atmosphere, it’s a top spot for a relaxed and fuss-free date night. Specialising in perfectly cooked flatiron steak, it proves you don’t need to spend a fortune for quality.
What to order:
I went with two friends, and we all went for the signature flatiron steak, cooked rare for me. Considering the price point, it was a much better-quality steak than expected—tender and dedicant. We all chose peppercorn sauce, for sides, we ordered two portions of mac and cheese with pancetta and two truffle and parmesan fries—definitely more than we could finish, but worth every bite.
Price rating:
I was completely taken back by the value for money here! At £63.50 for three, including food and soft drinks, Finsbay Flatiron is proof that a great Valentine’s or Galentine’s date night doesn’t have to break the bank. The food was delicious, great value, and perfect for a more affordable and chilled date night this valentines.
Alston Bar and Beef, City Centre
First Impressions:
Tucked beneath Central Station, Alston Bar & Beef is a sleek, hidden gem for a sophisticated steak dinner. With moody lighting, exposed brick, and a lively yet intimate feel, it’s the perfect spot for a memorable date night. The menu is a meat lover’s dream, featuring premium cuts, indulgent sides, and expertly crafted gin cocktails. For a midweek treat, their Chateaubriand Thursdays are the perfect excuse to share a top-quality steak platter.
What to order:
My friend and I opted for the 500g Chateaubriand to share, served perfectly rare and packed with flavour. I paired mine with double-cooked chips, while she chose the creamy mash, both classic, well-executed sides. We also shared a portion of the Isle of Mull mac and cheese, which was the standout dish of the night—rich and indulgent. For sauces, I went for the garlic and herb butter, while my friend chose the chimichurri. A bottle of Sauvignon Blanc and two French Martinis rounded off the meal nicely. With its quality steaks, stylish setting, and great drinks list, Alston Bar & Beef is easily one of my favourite restaurants in Glasgow and a must visit for a valentines/galantine’s meal.
Price rating:
Dining at Alston Bar & Beef definitely sits in the higher-end price range, but the quality of food and experience makes it well worth the spend. Our meal, including the 500g Chateaubriand, sides, sauces, a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc, and four French Martinis, came to £170—a price that reflects the premium cuts of beef. For a special occasion like Valentine’s or Galentine’s, it’s a splurge that is 100% worth it.
